The Montessori system was founded by Maria Montessori, the first female doctor in Italy, in the early 1900s. She believed that young children learn very differently than older students and created a system that concentrates on their sensorial, math, reading and practical life skills through individualized learning directed by a teacher.
Montessori games and activities challenge the children and make them think in different ways, which is why parents like the program, said Sharon Bemis, one of the owners of the school.
"It's the philosophy of the education. You're looking at the whole child," she said. "You're helping the child fulfill the interests they have, but we also encourage them to do things they're not interested in yet."
